This standard is very important because it shows that teachers understand that learners need to be taught in a variety of ways to gain understanding and knowledge of content areas. While student teaching at Young Uns Preschool and Early Childhood Center in Dubuque, IA, I had the opportunity to plan centers for each week. Every week we would have a different theme and I would have the opportunity to plan centers according to that theme. The centers included blocks, dramatic play, discovery, sensory/cooking, toys and games, art, writing and library. Each center would be planned so that each one would have something to do with that week’s theme. My first artifact shows my week’s lesson from our “farm” theme. This is what is displayed on the door of the classroom for parents and others from the site to view. My other artifacts are pictures of centers and what is available during this time. Center time allows students to explore that week’s theme and content at their own pace. Since there are so many options available to students, there is always a center that will work for each student. Many have a preference of which center they go to most based on how they enjoy learning. The learning done through these centers gives students a deep knowledge and understanding of content of that week and can apply it to real-life situations and scenarios.
This has shown my growth and development as a teacher because I have been able to take a specific topic or theme and create activities for centers. The activities at the centers are created and designed for students to explore various areas of a theme. I choose the activities very carefully to make sure they are age and developmentally appropriate and also allow students to make connections and build skills meaningfully.
